Jimmy Harris’ livelihood, along with millions of others, has been destroyed by the closure of mines and factories in the UK. That got rid of the pesky trade unions, but also of the only hope of a decent job and lifestyle for people with low qualifications. Some managed to requalify, others became NEETS, in the third generation now. It’s not surprising that they feel betrayed and downtrodden – and Farage and his fellow populists have tapped this rich vein of resentment for their own toxic purposes. Politicians should pay attention to these people. They constitute a reservoir of anger and frustration, expressed in an inchoate scream against the EU, because that’s the target that has been dangled in front of their eyes for over 40 years now.
