Switzerland, the country with the political system closest to a perfect democracy – votes in a disconcerting way, to limit the free circulation of people with the EU – following the siren calls of the extreme right wing UDC party. The Swiss have voted, at regular intervals, on initiatives called by xenophobic right-wing parties – but it’s the first time that the initiative is accepted.
We are still awaiting a reaction from the Swiss government, which will have to announce how it intends to put into practice the decision of the Swiss people.
The next few months could be a bit of a roller-coaster ride for Swiss-EU relations.
