What Poland Can Do for Europe | Foreign Affairs

Elisabeth Braw is all excited about Poland’s armed forces and thinks that democracy should not be an issue for Europe in order to take advantage of Poland’s military potential, ignoring the troubling links between Polish foreign minister Macierewicz and Russian agents and the fact that Macierewicz is not only trying to reinforce the military, but has fired the country’s top generals and officers, leaving the armed forces, short on equipment, debilitated and demoralised. She mentions a “50,000-troop-strong volunteer force”, neglecting to mention that it’s a motley crew mostly composed of extreme right wing hooligans, good at beating up gays and people with darker skin, likely to melt in front of actual soldiers. “…considering that no other European country is able to significantly augment the region’s defense, Poland’s European partners should get over their pique. To do more for its own security, Europe needs to look east of the river Oder.” Additional information, from a different point of view: https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/poland-government-russia-ties-by-slawomir-sierakowski-2017-09

Poland is on a military spending spree, and its beefed-up armed forces have the potential for a bigger role in NATO and European security.
